It's time for the Book Blog Hop! Here's the official description:
The first iteration of the Book Blogger Hop, which was started in March 2010 by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books, ended on December 31, 2012. On February 15, 2013, Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer reintroduced the hop with Jennifer's approval. The hop will begin on a Friday of each week and end on a Thursday of the following week. Every week, there will be a prompt with a book-related query. The aim of the blog hop is to provide bloggers with an opportunity to follow other blogs, discover new books, make friends with other bloggers, and gain new followers for their own sites.
This week's question is:
🐇 "Do you keep up with the hype surrounding books?" 🐇
When I was far younger and far more naive, I did listen to all the hype, but nowadays, not really 😂 I've found plenty of amazing books that nobody was talking about, so when people start hyping stuff up, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's good.
When I stumble upon "popular" books, the first thing I do is check the summary and genre. If it's something I'd be interested in, I'll read the book; if it's not, no amount of "fame" will make me wanna read it 😂 The same goes for everything else - movies, TV shows, games.
There's also the aspect of overhyping stuff. For example, a book may be quite good, but if people are raving about it, I'll expect excellence. So when that's not achieved, my opinion of the book will be far lower than it would have been had I not expected anything. I hope I explained that right 😂

What is your opinion on hyped books?

This is an interesting question. I don't think I've ever been susceptible to hype. Now, I feel like it even has the opposite effect on me. If I see advertisement for a book all over the place, I get sick of seeing it everywhere, and the oversaturation of it all just turns me off of it. I do read popular books every now and then, but they're typically books I was already interested in before they took off. Or, like with Brandon Sanderson who is very popular, I hadn't really heard too much about Mistborn (shockingly) but I gave it a shot and I freaking loved it!
ReplyDeleteThat's also an excellent argument! The overwhelming presence of books does have the opposite effect - sometimes, I'll even skip a book out of spite because people are forcing it too much 😂
DeleteLike you said, there's also the fact that some authors are already popular, like Brandon Sanderson or Suzanne Collins (for a good reason!) and all of their new books get hyped. I guess the hype can be good if it's used in moderation and for well desrved books 😂
