The topic today is:
☀️๐ท How much impact do seasons have on our reading? ๐❄️
While planning my TBRs for October and November, the autumn months, I've noticed something - each year I do the same thing. I always pick murder mysteries and other types of thrillers/horrors.
Then I started thinking about my winter TBR and again, I want to read exactly what I read last year - fantasies and retellings. Basically, I'm a creature of habit and apparently, the changing of the seasons greatly affects my mood.
When the weather gets all moody, rain is falling and fog appears creaking a mysterious environment, all I want to do is read books that fit the same vibe. There's no way I'm reading a cutesy romance ๐ I'm picking up people getting chased on a spaceship by a mysterious creature, or something sinister happening in the house at the end of the street, or a teen investigating the murder of her BFF.
Winter on the other hand means a break from work and cozying up under blankets for long periods of time. For me, this means picking up the longest fantasy I can find and disappearing from the world. There's something magical about snow falling slowly, covering everything - almost like a different world outside. Basically, it's perfect for reading about fascinating new worlds, kingdoms, fairy tale retellings etc. The long break and cold weather mean spending a lot of time inside and finally having enough time to read longer books.
This also begs the question, if I pick up a book that doesn't fit the season, will I enjoy it less than I would if I read it at a more "proper time"? I'd say yes and no. If a book is truly amazing (e.g. on The Hunger Games level), nothing can lessen my enjoyment. BUT if a book has a slow start, or I have mixed feelings about it, maybe I would like it more if I was in the right mood.
I know this isn't anything new and probably most of us do this, but it's an interesting thing to think about. What about you guys? Can you read any genre at any time or do you also have genres you read more at certain times of year?

I read for some theme blogging months so I read more nonfiction in the fall. I've noticed that my fantasy and romance picks up again in January/February.
ReplyDeleteoohh that's interesting! That's actually a great addition to this topic, how blogging themes/ challenges stir our reading in different directions.๐ Yess January does feel like a fantasy month.

omgosh you mentioned me in your post, thank you so much!
DeleteYou are not alone. The seasons definitely affect my reading choices as well! I like to read books set in winter in the winter, for example.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear that! ๐ yes, I agree 100%, I can't even imagine picking up a book set in cold places, snow everywhere in the middle of summer. It feels weird
DeleteIdk if I'm really as seasonal reader, but I definitely am a mood reader. My mood doesn't tend to follow seasons very often though ๐ I feel like the only seasonal reading I do is for Sooky Season. But then, I read horror and thrillers year round, so ๐
ReplyDelete๐๐ well, in that case, you are a "one season" reader - the whole year is spooky season for you ๐
DeleteI've done seasonal reading lists before. They're fun. Usually I don't put that much thought into my TBR. I just read whatever library holds come in at that moment.
ReplyDeleteoohh you're taking the spontanious approach, I like it! ๐ It's probably more adventurous than making lists, but both ways work
