Today's topic is:
"What makes the best autumn setting?"
“It looked like the world was covered in a cobbler crust of brown sugar and cinnamon.” - Sarah Addison Allen
When I think about autumn books, there can be multiple answers to this question. It all depends on the genre. If I want to read a sweet romance (or even a more dramatic contemporary) there is no better setting than a small town. Honestly, the moment I hear "small-town romance," I'm sold.
There's something so cozy and relaxing about a town where everyone knows everyone. Where the main event is probably the only one the book mentions - some sort of pumpkin festival with hay rides and/or farmers market, where you can get the best pies and homemade candles. All of this screams autumn to me, and I absolutely adore it even though I've read it (and watched it, Hallmark, I appreciate you 😂😂) a million times.
Another setting that I usually associate the most with autumn is - school. Even though I finished high school and college a long time ago, whenever September comes, I think about back-to-school shopping, getting some new clothes for the upcoming academic season, getting all the needed books etc. Although technically, since I work at school, I'm still closely related to this world, it doesn't matter 😂 I think because school affected us all in a lot of ways, we all reminisce about this time when autumn comes back around.
Whatever the reason for this, school is one of my most common settings when I'm looking for autumn books and not just for romances. Mysteries can be so fun when set in school! Especially if it's some sort of boarding school, private academy, or any other "special" school. Kids dealing with hallway drama, new students, and exams is the perfect introduction to someone getting either murdered, kidnapped, or at least injured enough to start an investigation 😂
Moving on to my third favorite autumn setting, and that would be creepy forests with enchanted castles! These two would be great separately, but are even better together. Imagine a storm brewing outside, mist slowly rising among the trees that you can see in the distance while you're walking through the open castle hallways with a candlestick in your hand, the wind blowing through your hair, and there's an eerie feeling in the air...Doesn't that sound like the perfect vibe??? I love autumn 🤎
