Top Ten Tuesday - Unpopular Opinions

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. Here is the topic of the week:

🐝 My Unpopular Bookish Opinions 🐝

I had no idea how to make this topic work because I'm such a basic girlie that I don't have that many shocking opinions. In the end I chose to make 2 categories: a) books I hated/disliked a lot that the majority of people liked and b) some of my less popular general bookish opinions.

Let's start with books I strongly disliked and gave each 2 stars (but for some, I considered even less):

I'll start off with Storm and Silence, which has a whopping 4.49 rating on Goodreads based on 29,160 reviews. I found this extremely long 700+ pages book too tedious and annoying.

The Words We Keep has a rating of 4.33, with 12,736 people voting. It was too childish, cringe-worthy, and angsty for my taste. It's the exact genre of John Green books where teens are "weird," "quirky," and "profound," and if I was, say, 10 years younger, I might've liked it more.

Everyone knows by now how disappointed and angry I was at the AGGGTM ending so I won't even comment on it. It has a 4.20 score based on 492,053 ratings.

When has a 4.19 rating based on 16,187 opinions. To be honest, I don't even remember reading this 😂 I didn't write a single word in my GR review and just left a poor rating...I'll trust past me and say this was bad.

Moving on to Five Feet Apart with a 4.18 score (246,316 ratings) that managed to evoke exactly zero feelings in me. It's supposed to be this emotional journey, but I remember not remembering the main character's name 10 minutes after finishing the book 😂😂

Now I'm gonna talk about some of my...less popular...bookish opinions 😂

1.) First up is something I only recently realized, and that's the fact that I actually like "The Chosen One" trope...Hold the pitchforks and let me explain 😂

I like it when it's done right. For example, Katniss was technically the chosen one to lead a revolution despite being "nothing special." But the thing is, it felt natural. It was like the revolution needed a face, and she happened to stumble upon it just by being herself. It was wildly known and accepted that there were others who were much better at politics and other things than her, but they chose her for a different reason. It just made sense.

The same thing could be said for Cinder from TLC; she took the leadership position because of the unique combination of skills and complicated past that made her the best choice.

2.) I miss those old covers with crazy personalities. Nowadays, it's like most romance books have the same pastel colors and faceless illustrated people, which looks so boring to me and devoid of passion. It's not just romance novels; fantasy novels tend to all have those vague thorny things and dark colors 😂 I'm not saying all books are like this, but a very large number is. Maybe it's just me, but when I look at older series (of any genre), I can distinctly remember how each looked, which I can't say for all of the new ones.

3.) Not every book needs a TV/movie adaptation. Actually, I'd prefer it if some of my faves didn't get them. Some books just have too wild of a plot that you can't recreate in real life with accuracy. Not only that, but you'll never get the perfect cast for everyone because we all read the story with different eyes. There are lots of amazing adaptations out there, and I'm glad people get to enjoy them, but there are lots of bad ones as well, and I just don't want any unnecessary disappointments in my life 😂

I can't think of anything else so this'll have to do 😅

    1. The nostalgia hits hard when I look at those 😂 I'm still hoping for a comeback on that front.
