TTT - Important Buzzwords 📢

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. Here is the topic of the week:

🤔 Buzzwords or Phrases That Make Me Want to Read (or Avoid) a Book 🤔

To make things even, I'm gonna mention 5 phrases that immediately draw me in, and 5 phrases that make me hate the book without reading it 😂

💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛

1. Enemies-to-lovers (bonus points for "banter") 💀

You all know this is my favorite trope and you bet I'm gonna add that book to my TBR the moment I see this mentioned #noregrets. Also, if the banter is mentioned in the summary, it makes me want to read it even more because exchanging quips can be so much fun if the characters are smart and sassy enough 😂

2. Space adventure 🪐

These are becoming more and more rare, but they make me so happy - when I see words like these or something similar, I'm instantly reminded of all of my favorite series (TLC, The Illuminae Files, Aurora Rising etc) and I'm picking it up IMMEDIATELY.

3. Found family 👩‍👧‍👦

Ahhh, another amazing trope I just can't get enough of. I like it even more than most romantic tropes (it might be a tie between this and enemies-to-lovers, depending on how it's done 🤔).

4. Time travel 🕓

Sci-fi is definitely my go-to genre for everything (it's what got me to reading and what kept me there) but one of the more specific subgenres that always draws me in is time travel. I blame Doctor Who for this 😂

5. Puzzle/Riddle/Treasure hunt/Heist 🧩

There's nothing so satisfying as reading well-planned books about characters solving difficult riddles (or cracking extra hard codes/breaking into super secure locations) to get to something important. That's why I love The Inheritance Games series and others like it - you have a chance as the reader to also try and solve these mysteries and if you do, you feel so smug. If you don't, there's also something great about being outsmarted and seeing how it all connects afterwards.

⛔⛔⛔⛔⛔⛔⛔⛔⛔⛔

1. Love triangle 🔻

If the summary makes me think the protagonist will have to choose between 2 people, I'll probably avoid it. These rarely turn out good and I don't have time to risk it.

2. Unfinished series 🚧

This won't actually be in the title or summary, but if I see this in the reviews or book tags, I won't be adding it to my TBR. If I hate the book, I won't care, but if I end up liking it, how will I know how it ends? It would drive me insane, so I don't pick up unfinished series EVER.

3. Fae/Demon/Shapeshifter/Werewolf/Vampire 🧛🏻‍♂️

I never read urban fantasy/paranormal books so anything that mentions these types of characters/creatures, I won't be picking up.

4. Spicy/Steamy/Smut 🔞

I don't mind sex being mentioned, but if most of the book is about it (or if the scenes are detailed/explicit) I won't pick it up. Those are my preferences and part of the reason why I always stick to YA books.

5. X meets Y/ If you liked X, you're gonna love Y 📣

Whenever someone compares a work of fiction to another more popular work. it's almost never true. I won't be avoiding books that have this in the blurb (because let's face it, I would have to avoid A LOT of books) but I will be more suspicious of it 😂

  2. oh my gosh same on the unfinished series! My lack of patience simply cannot stand starting a series and then finding out after book 2 that books 3 and 4 won't come out for another year or two. I get too wrapped up in the characters!

    1. Yes, that's exactly what I mean! I need the answers, and I need them now 😂 It's even worse if the author decided to drop the series and literally never wrote a sequel despite the plot requiring it 😤
